The Platypus PlatyPreserve Collapsible Wine Preservation System
This is one of my new favorite things!
While jumping from hotel to hotel, I often find myself rushing to finish a bottle of wine before checkout, figuring it won’t make the trek. Now I don’t have to anymore!
PlatyPreserve extends the life of your wine by eliminating exposure to oxygen; exposure to oxygen over time can negatively affect the delicate flavors of wine.
When stored in a PlatyPreserve containers, wine can be enjoyed several days or even weeks later; package of 4 allows you to open several bottles and enjoy them at your leisure.
Containers are lightweight and packable so you can carry wine to the campsite or take it along to a picnic in the park.
Lined with a food-grade polyethylene liner, the containers are 100% BPA free.
Package of 4; each container holds 27 fl. oz. (800ml) of liquid.

It astonishes me that most people don’t realize that using a Travel Agent no longer costs them a cent. Whether we have our struggling economy to thank, or perhaps the explosion of DIY travel sites like Orbitz and Expedia, the days of paying a hefty price for the use of a travel agent are over! Did I just blow your mind? Sorry about the mess.
Nowadays, TA’s get paid in commissions from the hotels and cruise lines that they book for you. This is a double edge sword though. While we’re saving money by not paying the agents, it does open the floodgates for less-than-trustworthy agents to up-sell us vacations to try and make a bigger commission. I know what you’re thinking…that would be unethical…but it’s true, some agents are just out there to make a buck.
For those of you who are reading this and thinking about using an agent the next time you are booking a vacation, I am FULLY endorsing my long time friend and most trusted travel agent, Robyn Pring of Robyn’s Exquisite Journeys. I don’t plan a vacation without her. Anyone I’ve recommended to her has come back telling me how incredible the experience was. Robyn is easy to work with, has an uncanny knowledge of destinations and goes out of her way to make your trip as personalized as possible. DISCLAIMER: Robyn cares SO MUCH about the success of your trip that she will not book you a vacation that she herself would not take. She will not sacrifice the quality of your trip in order to save a couple hundred dollars. Robyn’s Exquisite Journeys is for travelers who understand that you get what you pay for when making vacation plans.

TripKnowledgy Tip - Use the Hotel Safe
You know that box in the closet of your hotel room? Has all those buttons with numbers on them? Well as it turns out, it’s your own personal very own safe! It’s completely free and yet over half the people I asked had never used one before. First of all, it’s against my nature to turn anything down that has the word “Free” on it (or “Gratis” depending on how wild my night was). Secondly, hotel burglaries are on the rise, so it’s about time we all started using that lonely little box in the back.
If the thought of hotel room burglars and fast fingered maids doesn’t scare you (or turn some of you on…), just remember that sometimes hotels make mistakes too. I’ve heard stories of hotels accidentally checking two different guests into the same room and giving both working keys. I was unpacking once and a stranger walked into my room with a key and was just as surprised to see me as I was him. Imagine if I had been there 30 minutes earlier, unpacked, watched myself flex in the mirror for 20 minutes, then left my stuff out for this stranger to find.
For that reason alone I put everything valuable that I can fit into the safe.

Is your favorite coffee shop on this list?
Swing by your favorite local coffee shop for a cup before settling in to read this story. You’ll be craving a cup of joe long before you reach number 10 on this list. Don’t settle for the stale sludge at the bottom of your communal office pot!
Equal Exchange Cafe, Boston: Like your coffee with a conscience? Grab a cup from Boston’s Equal Exchange Cafe, which offers fair-trade, locally roasted, organic coffee. You can top off your coffee with milk from local family dairy farmers. Plus, the cafe focuses on recycling and composting, and sometimes features educational presentations from farmers.
Bridgeport Coffeebar, Chicago: Reap the benefits of Bridgeport Coffee’s roasting operation at their cozy coffee bar. They’ve got a number of single origin roasts and artisanal blends on offer—get your beans of choice prepared pour-over for the best brew.
Lighthouse Roasters, Seattle: If a coffeehouse is going to survive in the caffeine capital of Seattle, it’s going to be good. Lighthouse Roasters stays ahead of the pack by hand roasting small batches of premium beans in vintage cast iron roasters every day.
Nook Bakery and Coffee Bar, Philadelphia: Come here if you want a good cup of coffee, but not if you’re in a particularly big rush; every single cup is made either via French press or hand-pour from local or regionally roasted beans.
Spunky Monkey House of Coffee, Portland: We know, we know. Sullying a cup of java with flavorings is coffee blasphemy to purists. But we think even the most die-hard black coffee drinker would be tempted by the flavor syrups available at Spunky Monkey House of Coffee (like the house-made caramel, organic maple, and honey-vanilla). Unconvinced? The house-roasted coffee will be just fine straight-up.
Walton Coffee House, Atlanta: Break from your routine of sullenly handing over $5 for a cup of Starbucks coffee and drinking it in rush-hour traffic. Head to this Secret Garden-esque location (it’s in a gated complex) where you can drink delicious brew on the banks of the Chattahoochee River. The shop is a Land of a Thousand Hills Coffee Company shop (their motto: “Drink Coffee. Do Good.”), which pays a fair wage to the farmers of Rwanda for their beans.
Ninth Street Espresso, New York City: You won’t find any bug-laced frappuccinos here. In fact, Ninth Street Espresso offers only nine different drink options—an espresso, espresso with milk (in three, six, nine, or twelve ounces), or brewed coffee brewed in an urn, cold, or chemex.
Four Barrel Coffee, San Francisco: Enjoy a great cup of coffee, and maybe actually talk about it with the people around you at Four Barrel Coffee. There’s no Wi-Fi or computer plugs in this cafe, so the focus is all on the java. Limited on time? You can get a pour-over or single origin espresso of any coffee on the menu.
M.E. Swing Coffee House, Washington, D.C.: Swing’s have been in the roasting business since 1916, so you know they’re doing something right. Taste the fruits of their labor at their D.C. cafe.
White Rock Coffee, Dallas: Warm weather’s almost here, so keep White Rock Coffee in mind for your iced coffee fix. They use a cold brewed espresso for all iced coffee and blended drinks. Plus, their certified Fair Trade and Rainforest Alliance Certified beans are roasted in-house.
